Anne Hathaway was last associated with LES MISERABLES when she belted out her own version of “Own My Own” at February’s Oscar ceremony to past host Hugh Jackman. Now, BroadwayWorld.com’s reliable sources tell us that at Jackman’s pushing, she is now set to take on the role of Fantine in the eagerly anticipated film version of the epic musical.

Additional actors being courted for the film have included Russell Crowe for Javert, Geoffrey Rush for Thenardier, Helena Bonaham Carter for Madame Thenardier, Hayden Panettiere, Miranda Cosgrove, Lucy Hale, and Emma Watson for the roles of Eponine and Cosette, and Amy Adams and Rebecca Hall for Fantine.

“I don’t envy someone that has to play Batman or Catwoman today,” said Julie Newmar, the former Catwoman from the Adam West era of “Batman,”

“It was a heck of a lot more fun when Adam West and I did it.”

Hathaway — who has been the brunt of much criticism for her less-than-convincing attempt at a Yorkshire accent in her new rom-com “One Day” — spoke with Gordon Smart from the Sun at last night’s London premiere.

When faced with what then surely sounded like an innocuous red-carpet question, as opposed to fodder for an online item that would immediately trend on Google, Hathaway said she would not rule out the possibility of playing Middleton someday.

“I haven’t really thought about it before,” she said, “but yes, why not. She’s great. It’s such a fairy tale.”

Commenters on the Sun’s Web site seem adamantly opposed to the idea.

“Stay away from that role,” warns one, succinctly summing up the views of many. “You have a rubbish British accent.”

But are they being too hard on Hathaway? If Hollywood does make a Duchess of Cambridge film, would she be a terrible choice? If the answer is yes, who would you prefer to see instead?
