Hathway stars along Jim Sturgess in the highly-anticipated movie adaptation of David Nicholl’s romantic novel.

“Well I didn’t realise how deeply loved the character was when I signed on to play Emma. I wish I didn’t really know! It became even larger when people kept asking me, ‘So you’re playing Emma? Will you be doing this with the character? Will you be doing that?’ I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, people know every word of this book,” femalefirst.quoted the 28-year-old as saying.

“Yes of course there was pressure, some days it got to me, yes there were days when I would liken it to walking between two dams with criticism on either side and you just hope, ‘Please don’t crumble today I really can’t take it’.” she added.

One Day is a beautiful movie, but beautiful in a way that life often is, not movies. Nothing is sudden or easy, either for the characters or for the audience, and there are no thunderbolts from the blue.

On a moment-by-moment basis, Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess make this long-arc love story viable, sometimes even vital. But the structural conceit proves more reductive than expansive, the big picture too overdetermined to really sweep the viewer away.

The most negative review was from Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers, who seemed discontent with the movie and Anne Hathaway performance, giving it half a star in ratings.

This tear-jerking twaddle, adapted by David Nicholls from his 2009 bestseller, is nearly as bad as Anne Hathaway’s British accent, which is heading for infamy. Hathaway plays Emma Morley, an idealist in a world of the cheap and superficial, repped by Dexter Mayhew (real Brit Jim Sturgess), the rich stud she pines for. Director Lone Scherfig, toppling from her peak with An Education, follows these ill-fated lovers for two decades one day each year, starting July 15th, 1988. By the 1990s, I was begging for mercy. One day? Like hell. The movie feels like a life sentence.

Seventeen: We’ve heard you say that Emma’s Yorkshire accent was one of your biggest challenges in making the movie. What was so hard about it?

Anne Hathaway: The thing about the accent that was really important for me to get was that it evolved over the course of the film because as you get older your voice changes, the way you speak can change. I’ve met a lot of people from Yorkshire, and when they left the area or moved to London, their accent changed. You can meet 10 different people from Yorkshire, and they have completely different accents.
