Anne Hathaway would play “a career woman looking to break her streak of losing romantic relationships to her job.” which currently no title but script is from 30 Rock writer-producer Kay Cannon.

Hathaway — who has been the brunt of much criticism for her less-than-convincing attempt at a Yorkshire accent in her new rom-com “One Day” — spoke with Gordon Smart from the Sun at last night’s London premiere.

When faced with what then surely sounded like an innocuous red-carpet question, as opposed to fodder for an online item that would immediately trend on Google, Hathaway said she would not rule out the possibility of playing Middleton someday.

“I haven’t really thought about it before,” she said, “but yes, why not. She’s great. It’s such a fairy tale.”

Commenters on the Sun’s Web site seem adamantly opposed to the idea.

“Stay away from that role,” warns one, succinctly summing up the views of many. “You have a rubbish British accent.”

But are they being too hard on Hathaway? If Hollywood does make a Duchess of Cambridge film, would she be a terrible choice? If the answer is yes, who would you prefer to see instead? Post a comment and weigh in on this matter before I start saying things like “cheerio” and “gutted” in an accent so awful it will make Hathaway sound like Dame Judi Dench.

One Day is a beautiful movie, but beautiful in a way that life often is, not movies. Nothing is sudden or easy, either for the characters or for the audience, and there are no thunderbolts from the blue.

On a moment-by-moment basis, Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess make this long-arc love story viable, sometimes even vital. But the structural conceit proves more reductive than expansive, the big picture too overdetermined to really sweep the viewer away.

The most negative review was from Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers, who seemed discontent with the movie and Anne Hathaway performance, giving it half a star in ratings.

This tear-jerking twaddle, adapted by David Nicholls from his 2009 bestseller, is nearly as bad as Anne Hathaway’s British accent, which is heading for infamy. Hathaway plays Emma Morley, an idealist in a world of the cheap and superficial, repped by Dexter Mayhew (real Brit Jim Sturgess), the rich stud she pines for. Director Lone Scherfig, toppling from her peak with An Education, follows these ill-fated lovers for two decades one day each year, starting July 15th, 1988. By the 1990s, I was begging for mercy. One day? Like hell. The movie feels like a life sentence.

Anne Hathaway shields her face with lace on the cover of Interview magazine’s September 2011 issue.

Here is what the 28-year-old One Day actress had to share with the mag:

On her royal obsession: “Right now, I’m obsessed with Kate Middleton. Obsessed. I loved the Royal Wedding. I was so cynical going into it, and pseudo-political about the whole thing, but as soon as I saw her I was utterly charmed. I’m just completely enchanted by Kate and William. With everything she’s doing right now, I say, ‘Yay, Kate.’”

On the Jersey Shore: “When I first saw the show, I thought, Wow, they are having a very different experience there than my experience in Cape May. I thought the first season of the show was awesome because it was authentic, but I don’t watch it any more because now they know that there’s a camera there. The Situation is totally self-aware. He’s referring to himself as The Situation non-stop. In the episode I saw, his car got towed, and he was like, ‘We’ve got a situation here, and The Situation is the situation.’”

On Snooki and J-Woww: “I like to watch MTV for escapist pleasure, but when I saw Snooki, I saw my twin. I couldn’t lose myself in the show anymore because there I was… That being said, I think JWoww is amazing. I love JWoww. She’s intense. See, JWoww to me is proper Jersey because she will scrap for a friend.”
